Hatherop Road Allotments, Hampton
A tranquil site located off the beaten track with about 236 five-rod plots (5 rods = approximately 9x14 metres).
Hatherop Road Allotments are managed by The Markhole Allotment Association, which has been running for 20 years.
In 1988 a small group of plot-holders were growing increasingly concerned at the dwindling occupation of the Hatherop Road Allotments, with rumours rife that plans were afoot to develop part of the site for housing and/or set up a wood chipping site where all trees felled in the Borough would be brought for processing. This group, with help from then Councillor Bryan Woodriff, took out a semi-devolved contract with Richmond Council to run the site on their behalf. The name Markhole came from the old name of Hatherop Road, which was previously Mark Hole Lane, named after Mark Hole Field.
